Exceptions

Authors of articles may make and distribute print copies in any quantity without fee provided that a copyright notice is printed on the opening page. (Please request before distribution of digital copies).

Authors’ home institutions may include articles in reprint series (i.e.,“Working Papers” or “Research Reports”) without fee provided a copyright notice is printed in the frontmatter or on the opening page.

Press Policy on Institutional Repositories and Article Posting

Authors of articles for all Ohio State University Press journals are permitted to post the peer-reviewed, pre-copyedited versions (generally known as "postprints") for "open access" on their own personal websites or deposit them in the institutional repositories of the universities that employ them immediately on publication of the issue of the journal in which they appear, subject only to the condition that a link be provided to the final published electronic version at the website of Project Muse. For all other uses besides this and those spelled out in their contracts with the Press, authors should submit their request to our rights and permissions department using this email address: OSUPPermissions@osu.edu

Fees for Permission Granted to Libraries in Not-for-Profit Educational Institutions to Reprint Journal Articles

Photocopying that exceeds the guidelines noted on the following notice to libraries is charged at $2.00 per copy. The library requesting permission can pay the Copyright Clearance Center, 222 Rosewood Drive, Danvers, MA, USA 01923.

Libraries have a blanket free permission to make reserve copies for use by students subject to the terms given in the notice to libraries. Most permission requests from libraries pertain to reserve copies, and therefore libraries are seldom charged a fee.

Libraries in noneducational and commercial institutions are charged $2.00 per copy, payable to the Copyright Clearance Center.

Reserve Copies for Students

Specific permission from The Ohio State University Press is not required to photocopy journal articles, or sections of articles, for reserve use by students if the following conditions are met:

  • The library subscribes to the journal.
  • The copying is at the request of the teacher of a course.
  • Not more than three separate articles for an annual volume of a journal are copied for use in a course.
  • A copyright notice in the following form appears on the first page of each copy:
Reprinted by permission from [Journal title] Volume ___, Issue ___ (Month ____ Year ____). Copyright Year ____ by The Ohio State University.
Example: Reprinted by permission from the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Vol. 12, No. 1 (February 1980). Copyright 1980 by The Ohio State University.

Interlibrary Loan Copies

Specific permission from The Ohio State University Press, or payment of a fee to the Copyright Clearance Center, is required for photocopying journal articles for use in interlibrary loans that exceed or do not accord with the "Guidelines for the Proviso of Subsection 108(g) (2) [of Public Law 94-553]" issued in the House Judiciary Subcommittee Report of September 3, 1976. The address of the Copyright Clearance Center is 222 Rosewood Drive, Danvers, MA 01923, USA, Telephone: 508-750-8400.
